Love Your Look and Stop Hating Yourself.

For many years I didn’t love myself for one reason or another.  Sometimes it was because I didn’t look the way I wanted to, other times it was because I let the opinions of others affect the way I felt inside.
CaptureI remember as a child looking at my acne in the mirror and spending hours trying to cover it.  In high school all I wanted was boobs.  I felt like my small chest and tiny body made me look like a boy.  When I made it to college I started to fill out and thought I looked fat.  Now I look back on all these times in my life and wonder what was I thinking?  When I see pictures of myself as a child I can’t even see my acne, my high school prom picture I feel like I look like a Barbie doll,  and in college I was super cute and curvy. Why did I spend so much time hating myself just because I didn’t feel like my outside was “right”?
CaptureSo many times we let the wrong things dictate the way we feel about ourselves on the inside. I can remember so many times when I didn’t like the way I looked on the outside and it made me felt like I wasn’t good enough on the inside.  The truth is most of the time when I looked in the mirror I saw myself differently than other people did.  I nitpicked every imperfection and allowed it to control myself self-esteem.   One day I decided I was too hard on myself and began to embrace the way I looked.  Now does that mean I threw out all my makeup and mirrors? NO! However now I use makeup and mirrors to enhance my look not to make myself feel bad.  My makeup box is now my own personal playground where I can change my look for fun…. not self-hatred.
CaptureNow am I saying that if you don’t like something you should just get over it?  No absolutely not. I use skin care to keep my skin looking good.   I don’t eat a whole bag of cookies or a whole pizza anymore and yes there was a time in my adult life when I did do that.  It resulted in me being 40lbs over my ideal weight.  I could have stayed in that space and let my self-hatred of the way I looked keep me from losing the weight. Instead I chose to eat healthier and exercise to get back to a healthier life style.  What I am saying is stop letting the way you look on the outside dictate how you feel about yourself on the inside. You are the only you in the whole world and you are special and beautiful.
One of my favorite quotes is   “What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” ―  Maya Angelou
CaptureSo at the end of the day it’s not about the shoes or the makeup. It’s not about the glitz and the glam, it’s about the way it makes you feel. As women, we don’t dress up for him or for her… we do it for ourselves.  Hands down, there is nothing more beautiful than a woman’s unwavering self-confidence. So don’t be your biggest critic…. be your biggest fan!
